So you want to get into sourdough, but don’t know where to start? Look no further! Follow the steps within this Sarandipity Sourdough Series and you’ll be making your first loaf in no time!
If you want to start your own starter, this will guide you through exactly what to do!
Day 1-7
Ingredients:
1/2 cup bread flour
1/2 cup filtered water
Tools:
Glass Jar
Paper towel
2 rubber bands
Wooden spoon or spatula
Rubber spatula
Day 1 Steps:
to your glass jar add 1/2 cup flour and water.
Using a wooden spoon mix until nearly no lumps of flour remain.
Once mixed well, scrape down the sides on the jar.
Place a paper towel over the top and use a rubber band (or mason jar ring if using a mason jar) over the paper towel
Use your second rubber band to mark the top of the starter.
You want to mark this so that you can see if your starter has activated at all.
Set in on your kitchen counter or in a warm environment in your kitchen.
Day 2 -7 Steps:
Discard 1/2 of your starter mixture. In other words take 1/2 of your mixture out of your glass jar.
You can save this within another container to use for lots of different things or throw away. If you are saving this keep it in the fridge to keep from growing mold, etc.
After discarding 1/2 of your mixture add 1/2 cup flour, 1/2 cup water to your glass jar and combine using your wooden mixing spoon until nearly no lumps remain.
Once mixed well, scrape down the sides on the jar.
Place a paper towel over the top and use a rubber band (or mason jar ring if using a mason jar) over the paper towel
Use your second rubber band to mark the top of the starter.
Set in on your kitchen counter or in a warm environment in your kitchen.
You should follow the steps for day 2-7 until your starter is doubling in size. To track this you will look at where the starter rose to compared to where your rubber band is marking its starting point. Depending on your location, climate, time of year, and many other factors this could happen before or after 7 days. You should follow steps for day 2-7 until this happens! Once it does you’ll want to move on to “I have an active starter” and follow those steps!
